Community Artist Melissa Knight

Batik and Community Artist Melissa Knight was born in Australia and moved to the USA in 1995 and has lived in Austin since 1997. Melissa has been a working artist since 2010. In recent years Melissa has worked on community art projects. Her first community project Interwoven Community Weaving Project (2017) at Rosewood Zaragosa Neighborhood Center, was an exploration of community connection through the traditional art form of weaving. Since Interwoven, social practice has become the central focus of Melissa’s art practice. She has collaborated locally and globally on community-based art projects including The Community Quilt Mosaic, One Billion Stars, and East Austin Studio Tour. Melissa also recently collaborated with Rakhee Jain Desai on a public art project “Harmonic Strings” for City of Austin Art in Public Places at the Pharr Tennis Center located in Patterson Park. Through social practice and community art, Melissa works collaboratively with artists, community organizations and community members.
